Walk the TC10K!
In 2010, the ActNow BC walking category continues to grow and we will attract over 3,000 walkers! We’re looking forward to even more walkers this year. For the 2010 event, there will be two walking categories; Competitive and Recreational.
Competitive Walking is a progression of steps taken so that the walker makes continuous contact with the ground, so that no visible loss of contact occurs. The style of walking is unassisted (no poles or walking sticks). Competitive walk division is a category where walkers walk the entire event and it will be monitoried by course marshals to ensure there is no running. Awards will be given in the Competitive category.
Recreational Walking can be a combination of run/walk progression on the course or a casual walk that one wants to complete with friends or family.
WHAT IS WALKING / RACEWALKING VS. JOGGING?
Walking is defined as a progression of steps heel to toe, one foot maintaining contact with the ground at all times. A slow jog or shuffle may also have one foot on the ground, which is not walking. The integrity of this event depends on each participant doing his or her best to maintain a walking gait. When walking, the leg is fairly straight at heel plant and as it passes under the body. As you start to walk faster, some people tend to bend their knees to pick up speed. According to Casey Meyers in The Complete Book of Walking: “If you see people walking fast, or attempting to, with their knees bent, they are probably doing a light-flat footed run / jog instead of a fast walk. Their locomotion systems are using more elastic energy from their muscles instead of the lifting and falling mechanical energy of their leg pendulums.” Their straight leg and rapid foot turnover identify Race walkers. A fast race walker can walk 7-8 minute miles and is not running. A walker may have a fast turnover rate, and still maintain contact with the ground.
Come and enjoy the fun on this year’s event and soak up the atmosphere, while walking the picturesque course.
